Iris Lares isn’t safe.
Not at school. And certainly not at home—a place of broken dreams, frequent bruisings, and dark secrets. As Iris approaches her sixteenth birthday, her thoughts aren’t like those of most teenage girls who are focused on boys and birthday cakes. For Iris, it’s all about surviving, head down, one lie at a time.
Nineteen-year-old Julien Turner, known for his fist fights and emotional distance, is the last thing Iris needs in her already troubled life. But when a chance encounter binds them together, Julien slowly enters the fragile orbit of her life, bringing a glimmer of hope into her darkness.
If Iris’s brother finds out she’s meeting up with a boy, it could end in violence. So she does what she knows best: keeps it a secret. But Iris isn’t the only one keeping secrets . . . and the ones you keep from yourself can be the most damaging of all.
